Segments
A segment is a fixed stretch of air with a start line and a finish line, like a popular glide from the launch to the next ridge. If you know Strava, you know the idea: whoever flies the stretch gets a time, and everyone’s times end up in one leaderboard.
You don’t have to do anything special. Fly as usual, and Sidekik checks your flights for segments on its own.
1. How a run is matched and timed
- Each segment has a start line and a finish line.
- When your track crosses the start line and later the finish line, that part of the flight counts as a run.
- Your time runs from crossing the start line to crossing the finish line. Sidekik also shows your average speed in km/h.
- The matching happens automatically after your flight is in Sidekik. You’ll see the result on the flight and on the segment.
2. Find segments on the map
- Open the Map tab. Segments appear as lines on the map.
- Tap a line. A card shows the name, the length in km, how many flights and pilots have flown it, and the current record (crown) with time and speed.
- If several segments lie on top of each other, Sidekik shows a small Segments here list. Pick the one you want.
- Tap the card to open the segment.
You can switch the segments layer on and off with the Segments button on the map. This needs Sidekik Plus.
3. The segment page
At the top you see the segment on the map, its length and how many flights and pilots it has. Below that is the Leaderboard.
- Each row shows the rank, the pilot, the time and the average speed.
- Tap a row to draw that pilot’s track on the map. Through the menu (three dots) you can choose Show on map or Open flight.
- Show Filters opens the Filters. Narrow the leaderboard by Date Range (Start Date, End Date) or use Filter by Club to see only one club’s pilots. Tap Apply. Reset brings back the full leaderboard.
- My Results lists all your own runs on this segment with date, time and speed. Tap one to open the flight. If you haven’t flown it yet, you’ll see “No attempts yet”.
4. Segments on your flights
Open a flight and you’ll see which segments you flew:
- The flight shows a chip like 3 segments. Tap it to see Segments in this flight.
- If you made it into a segment’s top five, you’ll also see a Top 5 chip with a crown.
- Further down, the Segments card lists every segment from the flight with your time. Tap a segment to open its page. If there are none, it says “No segments for this flight.”
5. Segment records on your profile
Your best placings are collected under Segment records in the You tab. It shows segments where you’re in the top five: a crown for first place, otherwise your rank, plus the date. Tap View all to see the complete list.
Other pilots’ profiles show their segment records in the same place.
6. Club segments
Clubs can create their own segments, for example for their home site. Club admins set them up outside the app. In the app you’ll find them on the club page under Segments, with the number of Attempts and Pilots. They also appear on the map like any other segment. More in Club challenges.
Tips
- Use Filter by Club to compare yourself with your club mates instead of the whole world.
- Tap a faster pilot in the leaderboard and compare their track with yours on the map. You’ll often see where they found the better line.
- My Results shows whether you’re getting faster over time.
- Check the Top 5 chip after a good day. It points you straight to the segment where you placed.
